How to Operate a Temporary Heater

Temporary heaters provide comfort heat and support drying on job sites. Because many are fuel-fired and produce combustion gases, ventilation and clearances are critical. Follow the unit's manual and the fuel type's safety requirements.

⚠ Safety essentials

  • Fuel-fired heaters produce carbon monoxide — provide adequate ventilation. Use CO monitoring in occupied spaces.
  • Keep the required clearance from combustibles (walls, tarps, materials). Never aim a heater at anything flammable.
  • Refuel only when cool and off, away from ignition sources.
  • Never leave a running heater unattended in an unsafe setup; keep extinguishing equipment nearby.

Choose direct vs. indirect

Indirect-fired heaters vent exhaust outside (cleaner air inside); direct-fired put combustion products into the space and need more ventilation. Pick the right type for your job.

Position with clearances

Set the heater on stable ground with manufacturer-specified clearances from all combustibles and adequate ventilation.

Check fuel and connections

Verify fuel supply and connections are sound with no leaks before ignition.

Ignite per the manual

Follow the unit's startup/ignition sequence exactly.

Monitor

Watch temperature and, in occupied spaces, CO levels. Ensure ventilation stays adequate.

Shut down and cool

Follow the shutdown sequence and let the unit cool before moving or refueling.
