How to Use a Water Extractor
Water extractors remove standing water and moisture from carpet, flooring and surfaces — the critical first step in water-damage restoration before drying begins.

⚠ Safety essentials
- Use GFCI power and never handle electrical connections in standing water.
- Be aware of slip hazards and contaminated ('black') water — wear appropriate PPE.
- Don't exceed the recovery tank capacity; empty as needed.
Step by step
Address safety first
If water may be contaminated or near electrical sources, ensure power is safely isolated and wear PPE.
Extract standing water
Work systematically across the affected area, overlapping passes to pull as much water as possible from carpet and flooring.
Use weight for deep extraction
For carpet, use the extractor's weight/stand-on feature where available to press water up from the pad.
Empty the recovery tank
Monitor and empty the tank before it overfills.
Transition to drying
Once standing water is removed, set up air movers and a dehumidifier to dry the structure.
