The tool finds your room volume, applies the IICRC S500 class factor to estimate the pints per day (PPD) of moisture to remove, then recommends the best technology for your conditions:
LGR (refrigerant) is recommended for warm spaces (70°F+) with standard humidity targets — the efficient default for most structural drying.
Desiccant is recommended when the space is cool/cold (below 60°F), when you need very low humidity (below 40% RH), or for large volumes — because refrigerant units lose efficiency in the cold and can't reach very low humidity.
Class factors: Class 1 ÷100 · Class 2 ÷40 · Class 3 ÷30 · Class 4 ÷50. These are planning figures — temperature, airflow and materials affect real-world drying.
Switch the dehumidifier type to size either technology. Refrigerant and LGR (low-grain refrigerant) units are rated in pints per day (PPD) and suit warm, humid air — the calculator divides your moisture load by the unit's PPD rating. Desiccant units are rated by airflow (CFM) and excel in cooler conditions or when you need very low humidity — the calculator sizes those by air changes per hour (CFM needed = room volume × ACH ÷ 60), then divides by the unit's CFM rating. It also shows the moisture load in pints/day for reference.
